Mentorship Program

Helping Students Transition in Grade 8

Mentorship was created as a class to help support younger students as they transition to high school, to build community, for senior students to be positive role models, and to help junior students be as successful as possible both academically and socially. In keeping with this, Mentors provide informational workshops, academic support, community-building events, and offer other supports as needed. In addition to the work they do with Grade 8s, they also offer support to Grade 9 students in Intro Leadership, visit, and offer presentations to elementary students, and connect with Grade 7 students before they join us at Burnaby North through Transitions in Summer Session and Viking For a Day.

For the last decade, Mentorship has run Grade 8 workshops in various ways: through Collab time, Tutorial, and during Flex time, to name a few. For the 2026/2027 school year,  Mentors will run Grade 8 Workshops through Grade 8 classes from Sept-April that focus on study skills, connection, community-building, and social/emotional/intellectual growth.

2026-2027 Events

Mentors visit each Grade 8 class for one block each month to build community connection, and skills.  Mentors work together in advance to design, plan, and prepare each session.  During each session, each classroom teacher provides support.. Each in-class workshop will last approximately 40 minutes.
